Teddy knew that it really happened – it wasn't just a song anymore. He had seen it himself, creeping downstairs for a last slice of gingerbread (Grandma Molly's recipe, even if she refused to do all the cooking for immoral, bottomless pits - it was still good, because Aunt Hermione hadn't made it).
Teddy didn't know what immoral meant – he supposed that it meant hungry, same as bottomless pits, because after all that's what he and Dad and Father were, hungry all the time. That's the way it ought to be, his Dad said, ruffling Teddy's hair until it was as messy as his own.
Teddy's stomach rumbled. He had forgotten the gingerbread in his hurry.
It would have been perfect, spicy and moist the way it always was when Father made it, better than it was when Dad or even Grandma Andromeda made it (Nothing so simple as cooking, Potter – even a dunderhead like yourself ought to manage it. Then again … but even if it made Dad frown, Teddy was glad that Father did make the gingerbread, because he liked the way he smiled when he said that).
Teddy hopped over the step that always squeaked, hurrying back to his bed – it wouldn't do to be caught, after all. No one needed to know that he had seen it. It would make Father very unhappy.
Teddy only hoped that Father didn't come home and see it – his eyes would crinkle downwards, and the silver would darken to shadows, and he would make the flat line with his mouth that showed he was really, really mad. (Teddy had seen that line before, when he smashed a bucket of Uncle George's new soap all over Victoire's white dress, and Teddy hadn't gotten any trifle with dinner that day.)
If Father didn't come home and see it, Teddy could pretend that it hadn't happened – that he'd never snuck out of bed to get some gingerbread and that he hadn't stopped by the tree to check if there were any gifts yet. (It wasn't midnight yet, and Teddy wasn't a baby, he knew that Santa didn't bring presents every year – but still. It was worth looking.)
He could pretend that it hadn't happened. He'd have told all the Weasley kids, the red-headed ones that thought they were so smart – he'd have told them that the song really happened, except that would make it true, and Father might find out if it were true.
Teddy couldn't let that happen, so he wouldn't tell anyone that he'd seen Daddy, with his hair all ruffled and his clothes fallen off, kissing Santa Claus by the tree.
