Luna is never in bed on the night of the solstice. She's like a loosed cobweb – free from her anchor, free from her earthly constraints, and unable to land for any length of time. She drifts, and Ginny follows her.

The darkened classrooms of Hogwarts, the long infirmary with its rows of empty beds gleaming in the moonlight, the base of the tower where the caretaker's cat kept watch – all the world is hushed, silent as midnight approaches.

Ginny is cold from elbow to wrist – she'd pulled on a robe when she rose to follow Luna, but it doesn't cover her forearms, and the wool scratches against her skin. Luna, bare to the night, doesn't even shiver.

She stops on the Quidditch pitch, stretching her hands up to the stars – she turns and catches Ginny's hands, giving her a crooked half-smile.

Ginny squeezes her hands, stroking away the shivers. Luna feels real, as though she's anchored to the world again. She steps on Ginny's slippers, the melting snow dripping from her feet down onto Ginny's bare skin. "A joyous solstice to you, love."

Ginny kisses her, opening her arms to hold Luna and share warmth with her – in the holiday darkness, with no students to see, she charms the snow from the grass and pulls Luna down.

Here, where they make a bed on the grass, where fingers meet and heartbeats mingle, where the moonlight makes Luna's hair more beautiful and her skin more ethereal, she's glad she followed Luna.
