The house elves take away the untouched dinner, the melted chocolate mousse. Harry wonders if they will rewash the clean silverware and plates.

He feigns sleep when Severus slips into their bed. Neither of them reaches across the cold expanse of blankets.

The smell of smoke lingers in Severus’s hair, smoky whiskey on his breath. Harry closes his eyes, wonders if the taste of another man lingers in Severus’s mouth.

The hours etch themselves into Harry’s eyelids, long, acidic. He waits through the night, through the familiar morning sounds. Eyes still closed, Harry breathes in the lingering smells of Severus.

Severus loops an arm around Harry’s shoulder, holding him steady. There’s a wobble to Harry’s walk, fogginess in those beautiful eyes.

“Severus? Severus, I’m going to float away.”

There’s a hitch in Harry’s voice, the first sign of insecurity Severus has seen from the young man. He helps Harry into their bed, conjures a glass of cold water and persuades him to drink it, smoothes the sweat from his forehead.

“I won’t let you float away, Harry. I’ve got you.”

Harry curls around Severus like a blind snail, burrowing into the warmth of his embrace, and Severus holds him there.
