Fall or Fly
Title: Fall or Fly
Author: lesyeuxverts
Word Count: 200
Rating: PG
Pairing: Sirius, Regulus
Prompt: #4
Disclaimer: Not mine.
The boardwalk went over the dunes and the grass, ending at the edge of the ocean, and Sirius raced down it, beating Regulus by a hairs-breadth. There was a teeter-totter instant at the end, neither of them pushing the other and neither of them catching the other when they wobbled close to the edge.
That was the way it always was, at Grimmauld Place and on holidays. Their mother sat on the beach, watching them from the shade of a lace umbrella and the protection of a charm, and her pinched face was as pleasant as Sirius had ever seen it. She did not disapprove, exactly.
When Regulus grabbed the railing to steady himself, and Sirius had regained his balance without any help, it was over. Sirius knew that he had won, and he dug a handful of flat stones out of his pocket, throwing and not-quite hitting Regulus with them, skipping them over the water.
This was the end of the world, the space where the land dropped off into the sea, the last year before Sirius went to school. Someday he'd step over the edge of the boardwalk and out over the water. Someday he'd fall or fly.
