The clock on the wall said, "Time to light the candles," and had been echoing with a cheery chime every quarter hour. It was almost time. Tonks' fingers trembled as she reached for the matches. She was sure to light something on fire, or trip over her own feet, knocking over the candles and burning down the building…

Bill was behind her, circling her with his long arms and pressing his nose to her hair. He took a deep breath. "You smell good."

"You don't have to–"

His arms tightened around her. "I know," he said. "I want to."

Resting his chin on the crown of her head, Bill gestured to the room – lopsided candles in candlesticks, gingerbread and steaming cups of chai, a half-finished wreath on the table. There were vines wrapped around a spool, ready to be braided into the wreath, and red berries had spilled onto the floor and lay gleaming there.

"What's all this?"

"I thought–" Tonks fumbled with the box of matches, managing to drop it entirely instead of opening it. She turned to face Bill, shrugging and burying her face in his shoulders. "Just … a holiday."

Bill tipped her chin back, forcing her to look up at him. "Just a holiday?" he asked. "I thought it was the anniversary of the day I first kissed you … under the mistletoe at Mum's Christmas party."

Tonks squeaked, tripping backwards as Bill bent down to kiss her. She ended up sprawled out on the sofa, and he knelt next to it, cupping his hands around her head and holding her still for a kiss.

"Don't break anything at this party, okay?"

Last time, she'd ended up in his arms when she tripped. Tonks smiled into the kiss and pulled him closer.

Sometimes being clumsy wasn't so bad after all.
