Every Christmas brings a new compromise. Half-dinners at the Weasleys, just until the pudding is served. Trees but no fairy lights. No mistletoe, but Harry can hang holly garlands and snag a kiss if he's fast.

This year, it's the gift paper. Severus balks when Harry brings down the red-and-gold paper, and Harry refuses to use ghoul-black.

"It's Christmas," he says. "It has to be festive."

Severus folds his arms over his chest and refuses to relent until Harry sees reason – nothing gaudy and nothing ostentatious. Kiss after kiss, they come to a compromise: Gryffindor and Slytherin, red and silver.
