Filch has the spatula, of course. He is seldom parted from it.

Severus finds him in the kitchens, lurking in the shadows while the house elves iron their ears. "In the old days…"

Severus has heard him say it before, has seen the dungeons – with whips and worse. But Filch is not one of the Carrows, he is one of Hogwarts' own.

"You're safe here."

Severus sits with him, while dawn draws tight over the horizon and the house elves finish their preparations for the morning. He has seen Filch come through worse.

Dolores gave him the spatula and let him bring her tea in her office, but at the end of it, Dumbledore returned. Dolores was gone. Filch keeps her spatula, and uses her threats to make the children behave.

He loved her, but he came back to Severus in the end. They are the two dark moths, shadows that wander the corridors and threaten the children.

Severus is the one who knows that they are only threats, the one Filch comes to in the mornings. They sit together until the sun is full-risen, a golden disc hovering over the horizon. The darkest part of the year is done.
