Title: Batter My Heart
Author: lesyeuxverts00
Word Count: (100)(2)
Rating: R
Challenge: Random Quotations #1, #2
Warnings: not fluffy
Disclaimer: Not mine. The title is taken from John Donne's Holy Sonnet 14 (I've always thought that one rather appropriate for Snape, somehow.)
"Humans are driven by a perpetual and restless desire of power." -Thomas Hobbes
Darkness swallows the world. Severus blinks, blind.
This is it, the hum of power against his skin, skittish and ungraspable. He takes a deep breath, each atom of air searing a path through his lungs, through his veins. Pain claims his body and remakes it anew.
The agony centers in one spot on his forehead, deepens and darkens and calls to him, power out of his reach.
The Dark Lord's slender fingers close around Severus's forearm, an icy touch to bring him out of the pain and out of the darkness.
"Come, my Severus, I have a task for you."
"Our virtues and our failings are inseparable, like force and matter. When they separate, man is no more." -Nikola Tesla
The incandescent light burns Severus's eyes, searing his dark arm, until the hazy world detaches itself from him. In darkness he floats, without an anchor, without a harbor, nothing.
Voices buzz, there's the clink of glass and the soft brush of hands against his brow. Severus returns to himself, blinking, anchored anew to the world.
Pomfrey leans over him. "Hold still, that's a nasty burn on your arm."
There's a flicker of light, sharp against his healing eyes, and he flinches. Dumbledore shuts the door, shadows filling the room once more. "Mr. Snape, I have an important task for you."
