"There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it." -George Bernard Shaw

Severus lets his fingers linger on the goblet, on Potter's pulse. The whisper of blood carried to fingertips, the throbbing of his strained heart, Severus takes a deep breath, and magic crackles in the air.

"Not tonight," Potter says as he takes the Horcrux from Severus. "I am grateful, but Ginny expects me."

Potter looks at Severus's dirty fingernails, his greasy hair, his chapped hands and lips, and he turns away, the last Horcrux in his hands.

Severus's fingers linger in the air, reaching for the fading heat. Potter is gone, not a breath of warm air left with Severus.

Severus reaches out, lets his hand hang in the air and then lets it fall.

Potter presses close to the wards, kisses the air inches from Severus's lips. "Missed you."

A Dementor ghosts down the corridor, lingers behind Potter and near its prey. Severus's lungs jerk in his chest with a jolt of burning air, and his heart flutters. He rubs the grime from his face.

Potter's breath is warm on Severus's cheek. Green eyes shine, catching the sparkle of torchlight long denied, bright in this gray world.

Potter leans closer until the wards shock him. "Love you," he whispers.
