The wind shakes Harry from his broom, and he hops down with a grin for Severus. "One last mission this month," he says.
Severus nods, his dark hair shining in the dim light. He says nothing, but bridges the distance between them with a soft touch. Their hands scrape together, and Harry traces the calluses on Severus's fingers.
"No worries, love. I'll be back by tomorrow night, I swear."
A chaste kiss, the mingling of breath and magic and love, and then Harry presses Severus's eyes shut with gentle fingers. "I'll be back with the Horcrux before you can blink."
----
The curse breaks through Severus's wards in the instant that he's distracted by the distant dark flare of the Horcrux's destruction. Pain stings his chest, ropes wind around his wrists, and he gasps for breath, gasps for Harry.
Darkness blossoms and blots out the moonlight. A Death Eater leans over Severus to prod him with a hex that sears and scars.
Severus spits in his face, and is rewarded with another hex, ice-hot and burning. "You're nothing but bait in our trap for Potter, filthy traitor."
The knowledge flames along his nerves and he bites his lips against the pain.
----
Severus strains against his bonds, reaching for the wand left out of his reach.
It is too far, it is too late. The Death Eaters snigger in the corridor.
The thrum of Harry's magic fires his pulse. Harry's words burn through his brain.
Grinding his teeth, reaching, straining – the tip of his finger touches the cold, unfamiliar wand.
Harry's magic sings to him, drawing nearer and nearer. Severus breathes, the midnight air harsh in his lungs.
He whispers the spell, the Death Eaters too slow to stop him, and the green flare is a bright warning beacon in the night.
----
Dawn breaks, as pale and solemn as Harry's lover, the subtle light shining through the gray clouds.
Unbelieving, Harry hears the story of the corpse, pale and dark-haired, a triumphant smile curling frozen lips – his lover's corpse.
Ashen and trembling, Harry shakes away the night's fatigue. Wand pressed hard in his hand, a curse trapped deep in his throat, he rides for the Death Eater's stronghold.
Harry presses frozen fingers to his lips, chasing the last warmth of Severus's kiss, before the curse blasts him from the sky. He falls in a flutter of robes, the curse escaping his throat.
----
Pale green light washes shadows and sins from the room. As it cleanses, it changes. Pale green blurs white and coalesces into two hazy figures.
Fingers touch, lips meet, and the ghostly moon banishes the shadows from Harry's face.
"Hush, my love," Severus says. He wraps Harry in an embrace, tracing the familiar wry smile.
Harry starts to speak, fumbling for words and tangling his fingers through Severus's hair.
"Hush, my love." Severus brushes away Harry's pearly tears, and seals his mouth with a kiss.
Green light enfolds the lovers with a last bright flare, and fades away into darkness.
