Too close to the dragon's mouth – Snape ducks and stumbles, the rocks breaking his fall.

A crackle of fire arcing through the air, a whisper of magic across his skin, and the fire passes over him. It's hungry and hot and denied, tickling him through the spell. Snape takes a deep breath.

Weasley, all smug grin and freckles, all lanky lines and sun-kissed skin, helps him to his feet. "Imprudent of you, Professor, to come so close."

Snape takes his hand again, learning the rough nails and tiny scars. "I suppose it would be prudent to take precautions, next time."

Draco snags another flute of champagne and pulls Neville out into the back garden. It's overgrown, neglected by house elf and human alike – the ivy rambling over the bushes in a looping, choking pattern, the tree branches entwined, the flowers heavy and puffed up with seed.

Neville follows Draco to the fountain, where they sit on the edge and look away from the green water. "This was beautiful, once."

"Yes," Draco says. "It was, before the war."

He shares the champagne with Neville, the bubbles tickling their throats, and turns to him in the sunlight. "It will be beautiful again."

Harry's exploded his cauldron again, moonstone added too soon. Severus has made the same mistake.

"Detention, Potter."

There's no reaction, nothing but a sullen glare. Lily would have protested the injustice, but there's nothing of his mother's spirit in him.

There's nothing of Severus in him at all. Parentage is as much nurture as nature, and there's nothing that Severus can do to change Harry now, nothing to give him spirit or wash away Potter's sainted image.

Severus orders Flobberworms in bulk, sharpening the knives and setting them out for detention. There's nothing else he can do with the boy.

Kingsley tugs on his earring, and Severus follows him out to the alley behind Grimmauld Place, pressing him into the wall.

Their bodies fit together – heartbeat against heartbeat, breath against breath, hipbone jutting into hipbone. Kingsley wraps his hands around Severus's shoulders.

"Not here."

Kingsley ignores him, pressing open-mouthed kisses to his neck. Severus tugs on his earring, and he stops, fingers frozen on Severus's buttons.

"What?"

"We'll be seen, you fool. Mad-Eye –"

"Gone home early, don't worry about it."

Kingsley kisses him before forcing him to his knees in the dirty alley. "Now, Severus – I need you now."
