Every year, Severus kept his promise on the first day of advent. He had a debt to pay and a love to live.
They had lain side by side in the snow, making angel-wings with their arms. Lily's hair had been her halo, and she'd smelled of gingerbread and toffee, spice and sweet.
Bells rang out through the churchyard, and he knelt until his bones were sore.
Stiff and weary, he lay on the ground over Lily's grave and made the image of an angel in the snow. His link to her, his link to heaven – his promise was fulfilled.
