Christmas was not the same without Severus. Harry paused, hand in midair – but it was the tapping of a branch against the window, and nothing more. It was not the sound of Severus's footsteps.
He completed his movement, reaching up to hang the brightly colored ball on the tree. It swayed a little, brushing against the needles, and the scent of pine came to Harry.
He'd pricked himself more than once, the needles raising faint pink spots on his hands. He'd made Severus hang the ornaments in the past, or else won kisses for his bravery in battling the tree.
Harry scrubbed his hand against his face. His allergy seemed to be worse this year. He hung another ornament, slipping his hand through the needles.
"You could use magic for that, you –"
"Severus?" Harry didn't turn – he squeezed his eyes shut, willing it to be real. "Severus?"
Severus kissed the back of Harry's neck, wrapping long arms around him. "In the flesh, and returned home safely."
He kissed Harry again. "Even you should have known I'd be home for this – that blasted, meddling Headmaster would never miss an opportunity to twinkle at us over Christmas dinner."
Harry turned, and saw Severus – unchanged, as though he hadn't been gone for months on a hazardous mission. Harry leaned forward, bumping their foreheads together, and put his arms around Severus.
"Still," he said, kissing Severus after each word and punctuating his sentence with love. "It's good to have you home for Christmas."
