Dark and silent, Severus ghosts through the corridors. He knows the after-curfew habits of professors and students alike, avoids their regular haunts with ease. He must not be seen tonight.

His nerves hum and spark with tension, longing, need. The air feels electric, as though he can trace each molecule on its path from his lungs through his veins to each tiny cell. He has waited too long for this. Tonight must be the night.

Hagrid’s hut is silent, empty and he sends a prayer of thanks wafting upwards. Hidden by the darkness, he creeps closer. It will be tonight.

----------

The moonlight breaks through the clouds and Severus ducks into the shadows, creeps closer to the fence under the cover of night.

He watches the light, silver on silver, watches the moon pay homage to the unicorns. They are light in the light, he is a shadow in the shadows, and yet he approaches them on this night of nights.

They shy away, the older ones, but the foal has not learned to be timid. It breathes, moist and warm, into his palm. Severus’s pulse thuds, his nerves spark. There’s intoxication in this purity. He has waited for this night.
