Severus stretches his arms until they ache, fire burning through veins and feathers. He puffs up his chest and escapes, swooping through the towers. His calls go unanswered.

Potter comes at last. His mother's eyes, his mother's heart, his mother's fate – it's gilt and shadows in his hands, only a portrait.

Dumbledore winks in his frame, and the other headmasters echo him.

Severus stretches his wings. Magic runs through his heart – a brutal twist, a swirl of pain, the long-awaited change.

He pops out of the portrait – wings to feathers to fingers, scowl to smile to lips. Rebirth is enough.

Severus had no such patience or sycophantic tendencies, and he cast Silencio on Potter and his chattering cohort.

"Two things, Potter, if that won't tax your intellectual capabilities. First, you are not old enough. Second, you will never be competent enough to join the Order."

Severus swept from the room, smirking at the students' inability to practice magic during the summer. They'd be silent all day.

“You will be a credit to my House. You will hold yourself straight and proud, paying no heed to the world’s changeable opinions. You will behave with Slytherin honor, strong with logic, with ruthlessness, unmarred by weak and foolish emotions.”

“Yes, sir.”

Phantom fingers reached out of the portrait, caressed his cheek. “You’re a good boy, Severus. Never forget that.”

Severus hummed while the potions bubbled with delicate vapors in their cauldrons. The dungeon walls amplified his tuneless song.

“One hundred bottles of poisons, one hundred bottles of poisons,
Take one down and feed it to Potter,
And watch his limbs turn gangrenous.”

He sniffed at the potion in a silver cauldron, wafting the red vapor toward his large nose. Cinnamon and slugs – perfect.

“Ninety-nine bottles of poisons, ninety-nine bottles of poisons,
Take one down and feed it to Granger,
And turn her brain into oozing pus.”

He added chopped frog legs to the red potion with a musical splash.
