A middle-aged man doesn’t learn as fast. Those impudent and empty-headed brats, with bright eyes and optimism, they remodel their joints and malleable cartilage with a wish or a prayer. Their sense of self is fluid, their bodies are changing. They haven’t settled into their bodies, haven’t learned each twitch and ache and heartbeat, haven’t memorized each imperfection.
Potter’s joints pop, he sprouts wings and talons, the Weaselette grows a fluffy tail and Granger prances, hard hooves echoing on the hardwood floor. Severus grinds his teeth, glares at the ragtag army of cheerful, insouciant, successful brats. He will master this.

Spy and voyeur, sneak and Slytherin, his heartbeat thuds through his tiny body from crest to tail when he sees Lucius and Narcissa cuddling by the fireplace, fingers and golden hair intertwined. They exchange kisses and promises, soft caresses that he’ll never again know.
