Severus stretches his arms until they ache, fire burning through veins and feathers. He puffs up his chest and escapes, swooping through the towers. His calls go unanswered.
Potter comes at last. His mother's eyes, his mother's heart, his mother's fate – it's gilt and shadows in his hands, only a portrait.
Dumbledore winks in his frame, and the other headmasters echo him.
Severus stretches his wings. Magic runs through his heart – a brutal twist, a swirl of pain, the long-awaited change.
He pops out of the portrait – wings to feathers to fingers, scowl to smile to lips. Rebirth is enough.
