Pairing: Harry/Ginny, Harry/Severus
Challenge: 116 – Gryffindor vs Slytherin
Warnings: DH compliant
Disclaimer: Not mine.
A house full of Gryffindors was a madhouse. At home, at the Burrow, Harry was smothered with Gryffindors. If he'd chosen differently, if he'd let the Sorting Hat choose. If wishes were fishes…
… if Snape were alive.
Ginny screeched. Lily ran from her bedroom to the Floo, her feet heavy on the stairs. Explosions came from George's makeshift lab. Even with the boys at Hogwarts, the house was over-full and overwhelming.
Nights like these, when madness overtook the house, Harry wanted Albus Severus to come home, needing his Slytherin son to balance him.
It was all he could have.
---
There was nothing new under the Tuscan sun. Harry pushed his sweaty hair back from his face and glared at Ginny.
"He's your son," she said. "It's your fault he's a Slytherin scheming bastard." She took James and Lily, holding them away from Harry as if he would contaminate them.
Gryffindor against Gryffindor – Harry's parents had lived together in harmony, had loved like the fairytale. Harry found no happily-ever-after, no peace even in his vacation.
Ginny led the way down the mountain, and Harry held out his hand. "Onwards and upwards?" he asked. Albus Severus, his Slytherin child, followed him.
---
A house divided fell – Harry was too Slytherin to belong in his home.
He was too Gryffindor to be Slytherin, too rash and headstrong to have saved Snape. There was one honourable man that Harry had known … and it was too late.
He led Albus Severus to the top of the mountain. They saw the others below – Ginny's hair was bright against the green of the vineyards.
Bounty and beauty aplenty, the world at Harry's feet … it was too far away to touch. He held his arms out, facing the wind as if to fly.
It was too late.

Date: 2008-07-04 07:11 am (UTC)I really want to know what Albus Severus did to earn such odium from his mother. This is a gorgeous bit of sadness, and it reads like the outline to a larger story (even if one isn't necessary). ♥
