It was nothing more than a feather – lighter than air and made for flight. Severus knew the words, he knew the spell.

The feather lay flat, and he'd failed. He'd be sent home – he couldn't do it.

One minute later, Lucius was there and helping him. One hand curled around Severus's fingers, the other on his own wand – it was easy, with Lucius there.

Wingardium leviosa … Severus didn't even need to say it aloud. The feather shot up and hovered near the ceiling.

Severus felt warm where Lucius had touched him. He would learn to fly like that someday.

-----

Feather-light touches from the breeze – the pressure of the Unbreakable Vow was firm around his throat – it was all he could do to stand there and watch.

He had promised Lucius. He had promised Narcissa. He'd promised Albus.

There was nothing more, no life after this – not without Lucius and stolen kisses and sweet sacrifices. There was no more to life than that, and Severus chose not to live without it.

He raised his wand. Lucius had taught him the spell, long ago.

Avada Kedavra, and he didn't even need to say it aloud, and it worked. It worked.

-----

The survivors built the biers with deadwood and rubbish, anything they could find. They pardoned no man, and they burned the bodies of the Death Eaters with the trash.

The hair caught fire first, the smell of burnt feathers – then the wood, then the flesh. Severus turned away.

The Shack closed around Severus, rickety and cold, and he was alone. Feathers had flown and bodies had fallen and magic was not enough, but the war was over.

He'd seen Lucius with Narcissa and Draco. He knew that they were safe, and that was enough. It had to be enough.
