The Muggles call Severus the Scourge, the bane of the neighborhood. At Christmastime, they call him Scrooge.
Severus has been called worse. Spinner's End has proper Christmases now – smokestacks swept away and tumbledown shacks gone, the neighborhood's been gentrified. Severus is the only one left with a bottle of whiskey and a "Bah humbug" for Christmas cheer.
The wards that he's put up warn him on the first day of advent. Severus ignores the noise – he's half a bottle of whiskey – but Potter bulldozes his way through the wards and pops into the kitchen, slamming a platter down on the table in front of Severus.
"You could have made it easier to get in, you know."
"I'll have to change the wards," Severus says. "They're meant to keep people out – clearly, they're not doing their job."
Potter glares at him – he has Lily's eyes, and she's never been in this grimy kitchen. Potter wasn't invited, either, but he doesn't wait on ceremony.
"Molly sent fruitcake," he says. "And I want to know why you haven't responded to the invitation to the Yule Ball."
Severus inspects the fruitcake and pushes it away with a sniff. "I'm not going."
"You could at least make an effort," Harry says. "I saved your life."
"I saved your life."
"Details," Harry says, waving his hand. "A free dinner, eggnog, the chance to see me humiliate myself on the dance floor … come on, Snape. It's Christmas."
"The same as any other day of the year," Severus says, but Harry puts a hand on his arm and looks at him with Lily's eyes.
"Please."
"You will not embarrass yourself on the dance floor if you are dancing with me, Potter. I expect to see a good show when you're waltzing with your other partners. And I expect you to be on your best behavior–"
"Thank you," Harry says, his arms around Severus's neck. He presses a kiss to Severus's temple and jumps back, having crossed the line. He wrings his hands and settles for shaking Severus's hand vigorously. "Thank you. You won't regret it."
"You won't live to see it if I do," Severus warns, but Harry's braver now that he hasn't been bitten, darting forward to plant a kiss on Severus's cheek.
Severus has been called Scrooge for good reason, but Harry kisses him on the other cheek. Perhaps this Christmas will be different.
