Sirius shoved Remus into the wall. There was a rush of power, pure adrenaline distilled into his veins – Remus's throat under his fingers, breath and heartbeat and gasp, his entire being at Sirius's fingertips.

The walls of the safehouse drew closer, day by day – Sirius lived by the rhythm, the slow shrinkage, the decrease. The sitting room and library had merged, the shelves of books toppling over onto the sofa and spilling their wealth of pages onto the floor.

"You promised," Sirius said, his wand at Remus's throat. "You promised."

Remus dropped his hands, dropped to his knees. He leaned against Sirius, giving up all of his weight to him. "I did," he said.

"He is safe," he said, his voice muffled in Sirius's robes. "I took care of him for as long as I could."

"And now you're here with me, doing nothing for him." Sirius poked Remus's cheek with his wand, prodding him until he winced and drew back, his head thudding against the wall. "You don't even care –"

"Look, I care. I did as much for him as I could," Remus said. "We can't all be there for him – Harry has to do this alone. This is for him."

He unbuttoned Sirius's robes, leaning back against the wall and looking up at him. "He wants us to be safe while he fights," he said. "He needs to have something to fight for."

Remus's fingers were pale against Sirius's dark trousers, and Sirius shoved him away, his head thudding against the wall. "Well and good that they locked me away until the end of the war, but there's no need for you to be here."

"Sirius," Remus said, standing and leaning against him. He framed Sirius's head with both hands. "It's okay. It's okay to be here while Harry fights – I know that you want to protect him, but this is what he needs, this is what Dumbledore has ordered, and in the end – in the end, you'll be there and ready to care for him, ready to smile at him, ready to be the parent he's needed all this while."

Sirius bent to bruise Remus's lips with a kiss. "That's no reason for you not to be there to care for Harry."

"Harry is being cared for." Remus gestured to the magic mirror, then brought his hand up to brush against the sandpaper stubble that Sirius kept, a defiant gesture that no one but Remus noticed. "Percy is taking care of Harry – Dumbledore has all of the plans under control – the war is almost won. It's going to be all right, Sirius."

The walls of the safehouse drew closer, pressing in on Sirius.

He claimed Remus with a kiss, pushing him into the bedroom, the last room that remained, and pushing him down onto the bed.

"It'll be all right," Remus said, and he shoved Sirius down, twisting around to push him against the bed. He pinned Sirius there with all his weight, both hands on his shoulders, lips poised for a kiss. "It'll be all right."
