Harry takes a step toward Snape, tension thrumming through his bones. There's a splash of moonlight on Snape's left shoulder, a rough circle over his heart.

"You're back," he says. "I thought –"

"You thought what you were meant to think." Snape sweeps his cloak off his shoulders, closing the distance between them. He unbuttons his shirt without a word, pressing Harry's hand on his chest, Harry's palm flat against his smooth skin.

Snape's heartbeat echoes under Harry's fingers. Familiar, constant – it's everything that Harry has known, everything that has steadied him.

"Draco?" Harry asks. His muscles tense up, locking his body in place when Snape smiles.

"You were meant to think that I'd fall in with Draco," he says. "A ploy, and nothing more – but I thought you'd be sharp enough to see through it. Disappointing, Potter."

"You loved –"

"You," Snape says. He covers Harry's hand with his own, pressing it to his heartbeat. "This has always been yours."

Silence, the thrum of Snape's breath, the tendons taut in his throat, the flutter of his dark eyelashes against his skin – Snape is nervous. Harry leans against him, pressing his cheek against Snape's shoulder.

"You left me," he says.

"The Headmaster sent me on a mission." Snape threads his fingers through Harry's hair, rubbing gentle circles on his scalp. "I had no option – and as long as you refuse to learn Occlumency, you will never be told any secrets."

Tense again, his muscles bunching up into knots, Harry takes a step away from him. "I don't need to take lessons from you like an errant schoolboy again," he says. "That's over."

Snape catches him, arms firm around him. "That is over, indeed."

He rubs the tension from Harry's back, his fingers moving in lazy figure-eights and long, elliptical loops. "You're no boy, Potter. Your responsibilities are such – you can't afford to sulk about this. Learn Occlumency or learn nothing."

"Don't leave me again," he says.

Snape says nothing, pressing a finger against his temple.

"I love you too," Harry says. He sighs and relaxes against Snape, leaning in for a kiss, and the last of the tension is dispelled when their lips met.
